The independent and powerful Hunter, a mountain dweller fighting wolves, takes up the rebellious Erken, who has a prison term hanging over his head. He initiates him into his trade and the boy begins to understand the mystical bond between the human race and nature. Years later, after being released from prison, Erken decides to adopt his teacher’s way of life.
The independent and powerful Hunter comes down to the village from the mountain and spends the night with Erken’s mother; in defiance, Erken shoots up a local shop. The Hunter protects him from punishment: he sits Erken on a horse and takes him back up the mountain where he fights wolves. The boy comes to know the shepherd’s life, the passion of women whose loneliness Hunter satisfies, and the struggle against the wolves. Above all, he is impressed by this world of limitless freedom, by the mystical harmony the human race shares with nature. One day he discovers his mother in the snow, half frozen on her way up the mountain for a visit. At Hunter’s suggestion, he warms her with his naked body. His mother survives but the police take Erken to serve his time.... Years later, Erken, released from prison, saddles a horse. He is headed for the mountain, for nature’s beautiful but inhospitable elements in order to continue living the life into which thenameless lone Hunter once initiated him.

Serik Aprymov (b. 1960) was accepted in 1984 to Moscow’s Film School (VGIK), and there attended Sergei Solovyev’s masterclass in 1989. He soon gained attention with the shorts Hypnotist (Gipnozshi, 1986) and Two Riding on a Motorbike (Motociclage mingessken, 1987). For his feature debut Final Stop (Kijan, 1989), shown in the section Focus on Kazakhstan at Karlovy Vary in 1999, he was awarded the Main Prize at Moscow’s Debut FF and the Molodist Kiev IFF. After spending a year in London, he shot Dream within a Dream (Zas zigittin kundeligi, 1993), which looks into the frustrations of a student theatre director. After spending some time in business, he returned with two popular festival films about present-day conditions in his homeland, Aksuat (1997) and Three Brothers (Agajyndy ysheu, 2000).
