The young heroes of this social drama, Alessandro and Ferdi, grew up in the shabby peripheries of Turin, with the tedium and anger of outsiders who are doomed from the outset. Will they be able to find their own way in life?
Alessandro Stellin and Ferdi Castronovo have always shared the good times and the bad: the same school, problems with their teachers and schoolmates, both the boredom and unruliness of eking out a living on the Turin periphery and, most recently, an old scooter on which they occasionally escape to the devastated suburban countryside or to abandoned, crumbling factories. Each of them, however, has to come to terms with his own desperate loneliness and lack of understanding from his parents: Alessandro lives with his mother, who is going to seed under the weight of a botched past; Ferdi has to cope with his unemployed, alcoholic father. Will these adolescents be able to avoid the trap of street crime, violence, drugs and hopelessness? Or will they soon begin to resemble their parents? A rawly realistic adaptation of Gianfranco Bettin’s novel with young nonactors, set in the environment of the big city. The film won deserved attention for its debuting director at the IFF in Venice and one of the three main prizes at the Rotterdam IFF.

Daniele Gaglianone (b. 1966, Ancona, Italy) studied modern literature and film history and criticism at Turin university. He began as a filmmaker in 1991, working with the National Cinema Archive of Resistance in Turin and in 1996 he was involved in the eleven-part video programme "Le stagioni della Resistenza". He began with short documentaries (e.g. Era meglio morirre da piccoli, 1992; L’orecchio ferito del piccolo comandante, 1994; Cichero, 1995; Il vento fra le mani - la violenza nemica, 1995; Luoghi inagibili in attesa di ristrutturazione capital, 1996). As assistant director and co-writer, he shared in the film The Way We Laughed (Cosí riverdano, 1998, dir. Gianni Amelio), which won the Golden Lion at Venice. Two years later he wrote and directed the black-and-white docudrama Our Years (I nostri anni, 2000), which won the CinemAvvenire Award for Best First Feature at the Torino International Festival of Young Cinema and was screened at the Cannes IFF in the Director’s Fortnight section.
