Worried About Work 2005 / Señora Beba-Cama adentro / Argentina, Spain 2004
In this bittersweet exploration of identity and class relations, a maid named Dora has been indispensable to her employer Señora Beba. But after 35 years together, will the Argentine economic crisis separate them? And if so, can they survive outside the protective confines of their traditional roles?
After 35 years together, will the Argentine economic crisis finally part maid Dora and mistress Beba? This bittersweet exploration of identity and class relations depicts their relationship with great poignancy. Dora, an Indian from the impoverished province of Chaco, has been indispensable to Señora Beba and both of them know it. While living in and caring for Beba’s upscale Buenos Aires apartment, Dora has been saving her salary to build a small home in the suburbs. Meanwhile, Beba, a divorced socialite, has seen her once comfortable standard of living disappear and heavy debts accumulate. Even clandestine trips to the pawnbroker can’t provide her with the means to pay Dora - or her utility bills. When Dora finally leaves, both women find themselves at a loss. Can they continue outside of their traditional roles? Live-in Maid gains added piquancy from Norma Argentina’s portrayal of Dora. Before making her acting debut here she worked for years as a professional housekeeper.
