Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2005 / New Town Original / United Kingdom 2003
Fresh, likable portrait of a group of young slackers in suburban England, one of whom falls for a thug’s ex-girlfriend.
Amid the sprawling landscape of Brit no-budgeters, New Town Original stands out for its freshness, solid technique and genuinely likable performances. Mick Jones (newcomer Elliott Jordan), an accounts clerk in his early 20s, wants to be “a doer, not a talker,” but basically hasn’t a clue how to go about it. Stuck in a tedious job, Mick hangs out with his buddies, Johnno (Nathan Thomas), Ozzy (Richard Gooch) and flashy Bal (Kal Aise), at the local leisure center, and fantasizes about getting laid. Mick’s horizons suddenly change during a routine drinking sesh with his pals when he’s eyed up by Nicki (Katharine Peachey), onetime g.f. of local psycho hardcase Si Naylor (Paul McNeilly).
