Variety Critics’ Choice: Europe Now! 2005 / Fuera del cuerpo / Spain 2004
A witty, semi-fantasy film about a traffic cop who finds himself “reincarnated” as a movie actor.
First-time helmer Vicente Peñarrocha negotiates an ambitious parallel-lives motif with verve, wit and intelligence in Body Confusion. Recently abandoned by his wife, Barbara (Goya Toledo), and with the bank about to foreclose on his mortgage, luckless traffic cop Bruno (Gustavo Salmerón) disconsolately snorts coke in a motel room. By coincidence, his ex g.f., Rosa (Rocio Muñoz), shows up at the same motel. She and Bruno have sex. But when Bruno sees Barbara again, she reveals that she saw them doing it. After Bruno leaves his watch at a gas station and goes back to get it, he finds the place now abandoned. Entering a hut and emerging on the other side, he’s now on a film set watching himself as Alex, a moody film star, who’s playing a traffic cop called Bruno.
