When pregnant and wealthy Ana hires a live-in nanny neither woman suspects what fatal consequences the birth will mean for both of them. This unconventional horror movie, incorporating fairytale elements, offers up an elegant classic style as well as criticism of Brazilian society.
Facing an oppressive social situation, Clara decides to apply for the job of live-in nanny for a wealthy pregnant woman named Ana. Despite not finishing nursing school nor having any practical experience, her presence has such a calming effect on Ana that the latter decides to hire her. While the women are getting to know each other, Ana’s pregnancy shows signs that are suspiciously atypical. The birth has fatal consequences for both of them. This unconventional picture draws on the horror tradition, exploiting its conventions to criticize Brazilian society. The film’s surreal style is equally referential, reminiscent of the classic studio approach to moviemaking. This, the directors’ second film, won the Special Jury Prize at the Locarno IFF.
