The Australian bush, Northern Territory, 1920s. Free Aborigine Sam gets on the wrong side of embittered war veteran Harry, who believes that the original inhabitants should still be wearing irons. This masterfully directed Australian Western about deeply embedded brutality and racism garnered the Special Jury Prize at Venice and the most coveted award at the Toronto IFF.
Sparse communities dotted across the bush in Australia’s Northern Territory, 1920s. A local preacher lives in unusually free symbiosis with the family of the Aborigine Sam, which irritates some of the other whites yearning for the old order. The embittered war veteran Harry March would likewise prefer to see the country’s original inhabitants in chains, so sending the good-natured Sam to help him renovate his house isn't exactly the best idea – especially at a time when society and the courts don't treat all people as equals… This masterfully directed Australian Western about deeply embedded brutality and racism garnered the Special Jury Prize at Venice and the most coveted award at the Toronto IFF.
