“We got nothing to complain about; other places it’s even worse” – or so goes the standard mantra repeated by teenagers in the border town of Varnsdorf. Employing uncommonly intimate detail, Lukáš Kokeš and Klára Tasovská’s documentary looks into the problems that plague teenagers living on the social fringes – problems often unseen by the rest of the country.
Teo, Renata, Anička, and Nikola. These four teenagers attend high school in the border town of Varnsdorf – and borderline describes the situations they face in Lukáš Kokeš and Klára Tasovská’s documentary. Graduating isn’t their only upcoming turning point: their personal lives are changing and some of them are planning their first trip abroad. The documentarists don’t intervene in front of the camera in any way, choosing instead to observe their subjects in intimate, formally polished detail. For the viewers this is an enriching, empathetic look that goes beyond short-sighted pronouncements about “wasted youth,” while also investigating forgotten localities whose unsolved problems are responsible for the turbulent social climate.
