Another View 2018 / Lucky / USA 2017
A remembrance of the late Harry Dean Stanton, who died in 2017. The film narrative catches Lucky at a time when his daily routine is interrupted. Forced to face up to his own mortality, Lucky feels that all his jovial fellow citizens should be conscious of the inevitability of death and the subsequent void, and that this knowledge needn’t be a painful experience.
Film and stage actor John Carroll Lynch came out with his directorial debut fairly late on in life. The credit and experience he amassed until this point truly come into their own here. In his film Lynch had the privilege to capture one of the last artistic statements of an acting legend almost two generations his senior: Harry Dean Stanton. In a sleepy, off-the-map little desert town, Lucky exists from day to day with his regular routines and rigid habits. However, our story catches him at a time when this routine is interrupted. Forced to face up to his own mortality, Lucky feels that all his jovial fellow citizens should be conscious of the inevitability of death and the subsequent void, and that this knowledge needn’t be a painful experience.
