Another View 2018 / Den' Pobedy / Germany 2018
Seventy years on from the end of the war, celebrating the victory over Nazism is a red-letter day which propels many people to don their best outfits, folk costumes and military uniforms and, with an intense sense of national pride, set off to honour its memory. An observational documentary that conveys the power of ideology and nostalgia as it captures the celebrations in Berlin’s Treptower Park.
In his new observational documentary, Loznitsa, an assiduous portrayer of shifts in historical memory, takes us to Treptower Park in Berlin where crowds gather every year on the 9th of May to celebrate the victory of the Red Army and the Soviet people over Nazi Germany. Buoyed by patriotic speeches, folklore performances, singing, dancing and feasting, a colourful ethnic, social and intellectual mix of descendants from the former USSR demonstrate their national pride for their prior homeland, from which the majority of them have long since emigrated. In static images recording the process of the ambivalent coupling of ideology with mythology and sentiment, Loznitsa seeks the answers to fundamental questions concerning the nature of social development.
