The tragic death of the youngest sister (Anna Paquin) brings together members of a complicated family. The broken husband (Rhys Ifans) joins the siblings (Melissa Leo, Cynthia Nixon and Denis O’Hare) and the aging father (Ed Asner) on a journey, at whose end lie not only the effects the complex woman left behind but also a moving portrait of her, assembled from painful and joyful memories.
For several hundred years the Scots have sung a traditional song, “The Parting Glass”, at the end of a gathering of friends. Its text expresses sorrow that their time together has come to a close but also joy at the thought of these shared moments. And thus it is in Stephen Moyer’s feature film debut, which sees family members brought together by the tragic death of the youngest sister (Anna Paquin).
