An encounter with the graceful Maï, however, complicates the young man’s indefatigable determination. This powerful, dark probe into the depths of a soldier’s soul comes from one of the most versatile of French directors (e.g. The Kidnapping of Michel Houellebecq). Here, Nicloux seems more influenced by The 317th Platoon from fellow-countryman Pierre Schoendoerffer than by Coppola’s Apocalypse Now, particularly in capturing the fury of war via the main character’s inner turmoil without needing to present an enemy.
