Asghar Farhadi’s eighth offering Everybody Knows, which opened this year’s festival in Cannes, is another of his films to illustrate the complexities of human relationships and their ultimate transformation. Laura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires with her husband and children, hardly ever goes back to her native country. The events that unfold on her final visit there change everyone’s lives. A sharply honed family drama starring the outstanding Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem.
Asghar Farhadi’s eighth film Everybody Knows, which opened this year’s festival in Cannes, once again explores the complicated and changing nature of interpersonal relationships. Laura travels from Buenos Aires, where she lives with her husband and children, to attend her sister’s wedding. The initial excitement is clouded by an incident whose consequences uncover much pain that was supposed to have been forgotten. The film’s characters are forced to come to terms not just with their own past, but also with the people around them, who often condemn without any deeper attempt at understanding. Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem excel in this meticulously crafted psychological drama set amidst the picturesque scenery of a small Spanish village.
