Another View 2019 / Los tiburones / Uruguay, Argentina, Spain 2019
Fourteen-year-old Rosina circles the slightly older Joselo like a clumsy baby shark. Although she hides it well, the hormonal chaos she is experiencing expresses itself in risky flirtation and outright malice. Debuting Uruguayan director Lucía Garibaldi’s award-winning study of romantic fumbling and youthful obsession leaves itself open to interpretation.
There are reports that the quiet waters of a coastal town are infested with sharks. And like a predator, fourteen-year-old Rosina inconspicuously circles her own victim: she is attracted to the somewhat older Joselo, who is in town for a summer job. But her clumsy attempts at flirting involve malicious risk-taking and manipulation. The Sharks stands above other teenage dramas thanks in particular to the subdued ambivalence with which it depicts its protagonist. Portrayed with confidence by Romina Bentancur, Rosina is a withdrawn girl whose unmoving face gives us no inkling of the hormonal chaos it hides so well. Debuting Uruguayan director Lucía Garibaldi’s award-winning study of romantic fumbling and youthful obsession leaves itself open to interpretation.
