Another View 2019 / Danmarks sønner / Denmark 2019
The immigration crisis has heightened tensions in Danish society. As nationalist voices gain in intensity and openly foment animosity towards ethnic minorities, 19-year-old Zakaria finds himself obliged to defend his Arab family. A highly topical look at current events in Europe, presented in the form of a dark psychological drama.
One of the loudest voices in the pre-election debate is that of the ultranationalist politician Martin Nordahl, who openly speaks out against ethnic minorities and immigration. The radical mood in society also affects 19-year-old Zakaria, who feels obliged to defend his Arab family. A highly topical look at current events in Europe, this psychologically sophisticated thriller offers viewers an intense experience, further amplified by its expressive visual style. Although debut director Ulaa Salim’s dark drama depicts an ideologically disjointed time that seems to favor extremism, the film clearly shows how people’s hatred is fed primarily through fear.
