Midnight Screenings 2019 / The Matrix / USA 1999
Kung fu, hackers, a world beyond the looking glass, evil machines, and the woman in the red dress. After twenty years, The Matrix returns.
“I know kung fu.” “Show me.” The nineties were a time of action films and cyberpunk – the shelves of specialized bookstores were filled with the works of William Gibson, video rental stores stocked gritty Hong Kong action flicks, and the whole world succumbed to Japanese anime mania via Ghost in the Shell (and many others). Then, in 1999, a film appeared that managed to combine the aesthetic and philosophical tendencies of an entire era – and fans around the world were ecstatic. An original mix of futuristic dystopia, modern mythology, and neo-noir mood, The Matrix’s choreography and visual effects left an indelible mark on the next era.
