Special Events 2019 / Learning to Drive / United Kingdom, USA 2014
As her family is falling apart, a New York literary critic takes driving lessons so that she can visit her daughter in Vermont. Her instructor, an Indian Sikh, is having his own marital difficulties. Together, they may just find a way to take control of their lives.
Darwan (Ben Kingsley) is a pedantic driving instructor and occasional taxi driver. He’s lived in the United States for many years and would like to get married one day. Wendy (Patricia Clarkson) is a highbrow New York book critic whose husband suddenly leaves her after many years together. When Wendy decides to learn how to drive so she can travel the long distance to visit her daughter at university, Darwan becomes her instructor. He teaches her to drive, and she gives him advice on how to communicate with the arranged bride who is coming from India to marry him. An unexpected bond forms between the two that gives them the strength to overcome a difficult period in life and start something new.
