Suburban landscapes and everything in between. The urge to document, to record, to give a voice to the mute, to the ostracised, to those who may soon vanish. Home, exile, memory. The filmmaker allows the “little people” to speak, those who are seemingly of little consequence; she asks her father about his first-hand experience as an immigrant, she listens to elderly widows, to youths hanging around the housing estates, and to participants of a traditional hunt.
Suburban landscapes and everything in between. The urge to document, to record, to give a voice to the mute, to the ostracised, to those who may soon vanish. France as home, as a place of exile, as a shared memory. The filmmaker allows the “little people” to speak, those who apparently don’t matter; she asks her father about his experience as an immigrant, she listens to elderly widows, to youths hanging around the estate, and to participants of a traditional hunt; her compassionate lens follows a Requiem Mass for Louis XVI. She thoughtfully chooses the extent of her own personal involvement in the story, she steps out of the role of the invisible observer and becomes the questioner, a participant who occasionally makes her presence felt. The film won the top prize in Berlin’s Encounters section.
