The notion that life is an illusion can be traced back to antiquity, and with the development of information technologies it now appears in sci-fi literature and cyberpunk movies. For some, this is the subject of academic debate, but others believe in it so much that they no longer recognize the boundaries of the real world…
Is “I think, therefore I am” still a valid maxim? Or are we merely characters in an enormous simulation so sophisticated that we are unable to comprehend it? Who directs this simulation? The film explores aspects of the controversial simulation hypothesis, which the author Philip K. Dick explored in popular culture thirty years before The Matrix hit cinemas. Is our world an alternative reality like that depicted in The Man in the High Castle? Are we unconscious victims controlled by a technologically advanced intelligence? While Dick’s stories were inspired by his mystical experiences, for Elon Musk simulation theory is based purely on mathematical probability.
