The new world brings much joy, but also difficulties that a European married to an Afghan man must overcome. But the clash of cultures is just one theme in Michaela Pavlátová’s new film, which elegantly avoids taking a stereotyped view of its subject. My Sunny Maad is first and foremost a humanist exploration of the dynamics of human relationships, which – though they play out against the two-dimensional backdrop of a Central Asian city – also offers a more universal message about the importance of mutual respect and understanding.
