People Next Door 2021 / Capharnaüm / Lebanon, France, USA 2018
Twelve-year-old Zain, who is sent to a juvenile prison for a violent crime, decides to sue his parents for having given him life. Shot from a child’s perspective, Nadine Labaki’s film takes an uncompromising look at the poorest stratum of Lebanese society, where a child’s outlook for a better future is rarely encouraging.
Twelve-year-old Zain, who is sent to a juvenile prison for a violent crime, decides to sue his parents for having given him life. In her award-winning third feature film, Nadine Labaki uses a child’s perspective to present an uncompromising testimony of the poorest social stratum and the desire to defy one’s fate. Filled with emotion and the occasional snatches of humor, Capernaum is above all an authentic story of the injustices and fatalism of Lebanese society, where a poor child’s outlook for a better future is rarely promising.
