Memoria is his first film shot outside his native Thailand, and for this tale of the magic-realist travels of Englishwoman Jessica (Tilda Swinton), who every now and then hears a bang coming from seemingly nowhere, he has chosen the perfect setting: the landscape of Columbia. As Jessica has a series of planned and unplanned encounters, Weerasethakul’s hypnotic images have the same weight as his carefully chosen dialogue. His pure film can thus touch on subjects that other filmmakers either avoid or that they fail to master.
