As an expert in aerial reconnaissance, she saw action on the front line from a drone’s perspective; as a civilian and wife she perceives the world around her in a similarly dissociated manner. Intense emotions have been supplanted by helplessness, humanity by unresponsive behaviour. Yet, if you just want to carry on living your life, a bird’s-eye view isn’t necessarily the best option. Maksym Nakonechnyi’s debut tells the story of a faltering woman who fiercely rejects the victim’s role and intuitively asks how oppressive can existence be in a society beleaguered by war.
