Zaninka is mourning her dead son, but her husband thinks only of himself. Mukobwa doesn’t want to donate an organ to save his father because he has discovered his dark past. Little Kadogo is learning to hate after experiencing his father’s brutal form of child-rearing. A lyrical film about the role of fathers in a country still haunted by the shadows of a national tragedy.
Zaninka is mourning her dead son, but her selfish husband thinks only of himself and their love is fading. Mukobwa can save his father by donating a lung lobe, but he hesitates because he has discovered a dark past relating to the Rwandan genocide. Little Kadogo is learning to hate after being brutally reprimanded by his street-thief father. A lyrical film that subtly captures snippets of crippled emotions, Father’s Day looks at the role of fathers, toxic masculinity, and the patriarchal system in a country still haunted by the shadows of a national tragedy. The film shows that, even with a modest budget, a filmmaker can discover the rich possibilities offered by cinema.
