Midnight Screenings 2022 / RoboCop / USA 1987
This anti-utopian story of an invincible cyborg haunted by terrible memories as he fights crime on the violent streets of Detroit was not only the most successful film of 1987 but has since become synonymous with the cult of the eighties. Futuristic criticism of Reaganite capitalism was never more fun.
When the low-budget action sci-fi RoboCop was released, it was expected to remain forgotten at video rental stores overflowing with B movies. But the opposite was true. This anti-utopian story of an invincible cyborg haunted by terrible memories as he fights crime on the violent streets of Detroit was not only the most successful film of 1987 but has since become synonymous with the cult of the eighties. After RoboCop, it was a small step for the famous Dutch provocateur Paul Verhoeven to make his Hollywood hit Total Recall, thanks to which his name came to be known around the world. Futuristic criticism of Reaganite capitalism was never more fun. The festival will screen the director's cut of the film in its digitally restored version.
