Sometime in the nineties, somewhere in a Turkish coastal resort, Calum (Paul Mescal), a young, divorced father, is spending the vacation with his daughter Sophie (Francesca Corio), a girl almost in her teens. This debut by Charlotte Wells, one of the most agreeable surprises at this year’s Cannes festival, captures fragments of childhood memories and doesn’t require flamboyant gestures to portray unutterably intense life impressions.
Sometime in the nineties, somewhere in a Turkish coastal resort, Calum (Paul Mescal), a young, divorced father, is spending the vacation with his daughter Sophie (Francesca Corio), a girl almost in her teens. The easygoing manner of her dad, who never spoils the fun and larks about in such a way that people assume he’s her older brother, however, conceals a disquieting veil of melancholy. This debut by Charlotte Wells, one of the most pleasant surprises at this year’s Cannes, captures fragments of childhood memories and doesn’t require flamboyant gestures to portray unutterably intense life impressions. The director states: “I think the overarching point of view is really Sophie as an adult thinking back on her own experience and imagining what her father’s experience might have been when he was away from her.”
