In July 2014, a passenger jet flying from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was shot down over Ukraine, killing all 298 people on board. This documentary collage assembles a picture of the tragedy from a wide range of available materials – flight radar, transcripts of wiretappings, Russian television reports, amateur footage from the impact site, choreographed dances, and animated children’s drawings. Combining poetry with forensic analysis, the film is equal parts elegy and found-footage horror. Its title refers to the shrapnel of the BUK anti-aircraft system that pierced the plane’s hull and caused its crash.
