“It feels as though my camera is filled with despair, just like me; it is filled with sorrow, just like me,” is the suggestive assertion from Negin Ahmadi, the young director and protagonist of this mesmeric debut. Negin leaves Tehran and sets out with her camera in order to follow the lives of an all-female militia group fighting in Syrian Kurdistan. It isn’t long before she starts to identify with these women soldiers since she discovers that the motives which led to the point where her filmmaking has placed her life in jeopardy also apply to the young combatants, who are similarly under threat of attack. Thus, for Negin, the filming process becomes a soul-searching diary that provocatively denounces the established cinematic narratives of war.
