Chiloé Island off the southern coast of Chile, late 19th century. A 13-year-old indigenous girl named Rosa (the phenomenal Valentina Véliz Caileo) is forced to witness a German colonist brutally attacking her father. This story of the revenge of an aggrieved daughter, who renounces her Christian upbringing and strays towards a cult of her ancestors propagating witchcraft and rebellion, enjoyed a huge reception during its world premiere at Sundance this year. Christopher Murray provided one of the most rousing experiences of the festival; his mesmeric spectacle is, at the same time, an intriguing commentary on the folly of colonising aggressors, who chance upon the magic-infused bond between the original inhabitants and their natural surroundings.
