The saffron-colored robes of Buddhist monks shimmer against the lush green jungle. In the background, the buzzing of insects blends with the rushing of a waterfall and the sound of meditation bowls. And all along, one soul prepares to leave its body and set out on its future journey. In a calm tone devoid of fear or anxiety, Samsara guides us through a meditation on death and dying. The film’s exceptional sensitivity and documentary-like persuasiveness are outdone perhaps only by the boldness to ask viewers to close their eyes for a part of the screening and to let themselves be carried away by a stream of non-visual sensations. The film won the Special Jury Award in the Encounters competition at this year’s Berlinale.
