“Who are the contemporary Orlandos?”, asks writer and trans activist Paul B. Preciado, in reference to the famous work by Virginia Woolf. In his directing debut, a collective documentary portrait, he pays tribute to the first novel whose main character undergoes transition, written almost a century ago; he also invites twenty-five people, all trans or gender fluid, not only to recall passages from the book, but also to speak about what it is to be transgender or non-binary. This proud, intellectually uncompromising and shrewdly witty essay upends stereotypes, dismantles categories and gives the finger to an oppressive gender system which insists there are only men and women on this earth and nothing in between.
