Seventeen-year-old Suzume lives a quiet life on Kyushu Island, until she discovers a mysterious door standing in some ruins outside town. Suspicious objects appearing in films are best ignored, however – especially if they are guarded by a cute little animal… Makoto Shinkai’s fantasy tale about a catastrophe of unprecedented proportions was inspired by the tough experience of the Japanese tragedy in 2011. The film combines a disaster of epic proportions with a quirky, almost mischievous coming-of-age drama. After the successes of Belle at Cannes and Inu-Oh in Venice, this year Suzume brought Japanese animation back to the Berlinale, where it was shown in the main competition and immediately earned a reputation as the anime event of the year.
