After being forced to leave Iran, Iman lives in a refugee facility with his family. Their bleak existence consists of constant moves and the long wait to be granted a visa. In an attempt at ensuring their future in Sweden, Iman returns to wrestling despite having promised his wife that he wouldn’t. It is a decision that not only brings physical pain but also opens up wounds in his soul. A psychological drama about a man caught between suppressed desires and his duty to his family, Opponent takes an incisive look at questions of uprootedness, freedom, and tolerance. Milad Alami’s second feature impressed audiences at the Berlinale thanks to its economical storytelling and an excellent performance by Payman Maadi (A Separation, 2011).
