Filmmaker A.V. Rockwell knows that an original, strong and complex main character essentially constitutes half the success of a truly great film. Her Inez de la Paz (the phenomenal Teyana Taylor) is proud, impulsive and unpredictable, yet also loving and single-minded. The charismatic woman, hardened by the streets of New York and time spent behind bars, grabs the viewers’ attention when she kidnaps her six-year-old son Terry from his foster home. This emotive drama, which garnered the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance this year, unfolds over the course of two decades; during this time the mother, determined to provide her son with the home she never had, grapples not only with the signs of the times, such as gentrification, but also with the consequences of radical decisions made long ago.
