Sandra (the fascinating Sandra Hüller) is a successful writer, living with her husband and son Daniel in the French Alps. When Daniel returns home one day from walking the dog, he finds his father’s dead body lying on the ground. There was no-one else in the house at the time except the parents, and an investigation gets under way to ascertain whether the fall was an act of suicide, or whether Sandra killed her husband… In her gripping courtroom drama with its sophisticated feminist undercurrent, Justine Triet dismantles the central couple’s relationship little by little, reducing it to its very core, and asks the audience how their own relationships would hold out if moments of private hell were subject to similar public scrutiny. The film won the Palme d’Or at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
