The 1980s. Disheveled, unshaven, in a faded white coat, always a cigarette between his lips. This is the Englishman Arthur (Josh O’Connor), who is on his way back to a seaside village in Tuscany. His job? Treasure hunter – he and a ragtag gang of compatriots earn their living robbing Etruscan graves. But hidden behind his unkempt exterior is an inner turmoil fueled by his inability to forget his lost love Beniamina. Fantasy film or eccentric, comedic dream? The Karlovy Vary festival program just had to reserve a place for Alice Rohrwacher’s fourth feature outing, characterized by her typically wild plot and unmistakably vibrant style.
