“Why don’t I have any photographs from my childhood?” This question marks the beginning of Moroccan director Asmae El Moudir’s search for family secrets, which won her the directing award in the Un Certain Regard section at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Asmae reconstructs her family history with the help of her entire family. Just for the film, her father built a miniature reconstruction of the neighborhood where the family lived, and her mother sewed scarves for figures representing family, friends, and neighbors. As a result, everybody is suddenly confronted with a view of their younger selves – and with a past they had wanted to hide behind lies that, even when repeated a thousand times, could never become truth.
