Oral exams. A question. Panic, fever, sweating. As young Abel grasps for words, his teacher asks him a seemingly innocent question that changes everything. Gábor Reisz’s third feature outing is set in contemporary Hungary, but given the rising social tensions throughout the world, his Explanation for Everything is – unfortunately – a universal story. Reisz approaches the subject of strongly divided opinions, of a societal powder keg ready to explode, with a sense of humor and understated ease. And yet he does not shy away from showing the deep and difficult-to-heal wounds that divide families and strangers alike. Winner of the Orizzonti Award for Best Film at last year’s Venice Film Festival.
