Five teenagers set off in a beat-up old van on their last summer vacation before their adult lives engulf them. They want to finally see the Pacific Ocean, but they’re hundreds of miles – and dozens of adventures – from their destination. The latest film from the American directing duo The Ross Brothers tries to capture the teenagers’ sense of freedom and friendship, but also their intangible anticipation of the future. This visually captivating road movie, which was shown in the Orizzonti competition at the Venice Film Festival, feels as if the filmmakers had simply set out on a journey with their protagonists, for whom the most important thing is to live in the here and now.
