Sixteen-year-old Mira, an ambitious and successful student at a strict boarding school, is slowly growing closer to an older classmate. Their initially cautious romance is soon dominated by sexual curiosity and desire, which the young couple must keep hidden from their teachers and from Mira’s mother, within whom Mira’s relationship also begins to awaken something previously dormant. An exceptionally sensitively shot and subtly acted film, the sense of humor, depth, and tenderness with which Girls Will Be Girls portrays the fragile period of adolescence made it an audience favorite at this year’s Sundance, from where it ultimately took home the Audience Award.
