Midnight Screenings 2024 / Steppenwolf / Kazakhstan 2024
Director Adilkhan Yerzhanov has combined Hermann Hesse’s cult novel Steppenwolf with the classic westerns The Searchers and Red River. The result? A cynical road movie set in a wasteland wracked by civil war. Its protagonist is a lone warrior who long ago adapted to the ruthless reality of permanent struggle, and yet he decides to help a terrified mother find her lost son. Laconic and brutal, Steppenwolf takes us into a world permeated by violence, a world of eternal war of all against all. Even its hero, himself a part of the vicious cycle of killing, shows that in a world of wolves there is no such thing as a righteous gunslinger.
