Out of the Past 2024 / Paris, Texas / Germany, France, United Kingdom, USA 1984
A dishevelled man roaming the desert has lost his memory and power of speech. Where is he headed and what trauma is he dragging resolutely behind him? One of the true highlights of this year’s Vary will undeniably be the screening of the brand new restored copy of a beloved gem which, forty years ago, earned the creator of Wings of Desire and Perfect Days the Palme d’Or in Cannes. This melancholy, poignant drama, which many regard as the best road movie of all time, explores various fundamental “matters of life”, among them, the relationship between father and son, the former played here by the matchless Harry Dean Stanton. This understated ode to male fragility and vulnerability, scripted by Sam Shepard with music by Ry Cooder, was considered by many to be their favourite film, Kurt Cobain included.
