“I found you a suitable widower – he has ten children and needs to take a rest.” Life wasn’t easy for women in Italy in the year 1800, and it didn’t matter that (like the heroines of Gloria!) they were putting together a new piece at the music institute for the recently elected pope. For her directorial debut, Italian actress Margherita Vicario has chosen to explore this forgotten chapter of history. Her film, which was shown in competition at this year’s Berlinale, reminds us that music history is not just about male composers, and that sometimes even an art school can be a place from which we need to escape into dreams and fantasies.
