When Shuo is injured at school, his classmate Wein invites him home to his place. After getting to know his parents, Shuo keeps returning for visits – and, surprisingly, they welcome him as a part of their family. But the more their lives are intertwined, the clearer it becomes that not everyone is happy with the new situation, for they all have their own secrets. This unsettling drama touching on China’s one-child policy premiered in the Panorama section at this year’s Berlinale, and although History of a Family marks the director’s feature film debut, it is a formally focused film directed with a steady hand and with a carefully arranged structure.
