Social worker Sylvia leads a seemingly unexciting life with a few constants: her daughter, her job, AA meetings. This simple and dignified existence, reinforced by routine, is shaken by Sylvia’s encounter with Saul, a man with early signs of dementia who unwittingly forces her to confront her own traumas of the past. This understated romance set in Brooklyn and directed with a solid, mature, and unostentatious hand by one of the most acclaimed directors of his generation features breathtaking performances from Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard, the latter of whom was awarded at last year’s Venice Film Festival, where this sensitive gem had its world premiere.
