“Ukraine is like porcelain – easy to break, but impossible to destroy.” An emotional documentary about people forced, from one day to the next, to leave their earlier lives behind in order to stand up in defense of their homeland. The award-winning Porcelain War, which began its journey with the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, consists almost entirely of footage shot by its main protagonists, Slava, Anya, and Andrey. It derives its strength from the tenderness and civility with which it depicts the ordinary life of its artistically inclined subjects, interspersed with uncompromising and gritty footage directly from the battlefield. Both these layers are combined with the same nonchalant matter-of-factness with which they are accepted by the film’s protagonists.
