“I wish my mother was here so I could ask her...” When Hiam Abbas (Succession, Munich) was twenty-three, she decided to leave her native village in Palestine to pursue a career in acting. Several decades later, she returns home alongside her daughter Lina Soualem to complete a cinematic portrait of her family that is also a chronicle of four generations of indomitable women facing voluntary and forced separation. In her extremely personal and, in its level of openness, highly moving film, Soualem tells the tragic story of all of Palestine through the stories of her mother and other women, affirming that no amount of destruction can break the bonds of family.
