It matters that we talk to our ancestors and it’s equally important that we find a balance between our respect for them and our quest to find new ways to communicate. And that’s precisely what Indonesian artist Natasha Tontey attempts to do in her playful work. Inspired by Minahasan cosmology, she draws us into unknown worlds, which combine ancient rituals with speculative fiction. Conceptual depth encounters disarming naivety, where not even gaudy backdrops detract from suggestive ritual. An arrival from above could also be heralded by a stroboscope.
