The headstrong Kathy (Jodie Comer) succumbs to biker Benny’s (Austin Butler) charms faster than a match catches fire. It’s the mid-1960s, and the carefree Benny is a member of the Vandals, a motorcycle club that, led by the charismatic Johnny (Tom Hardy), has become a gang in the Chicago suburbs. But the dark side of the true desire for freedom inevitably seeps into the young lovers’ intense relationship. This tumultuous drama’s visual style was inspired by the iconic black-and-white photographs from an eponymous 1968 publication, whose author Danny Lyon, a member of the Outlaws gang, had direct access to the biker community. Jeff Nichols’s film is presented as part of our tribute to renowned casting director Francine Maisler.
