In Copenhagen just after the First World War, young Karolina works as a factory seamstress. Her husband is missing but, for her, he died long ago. A brief hope for a new marriage is dashed by the mother of the groom, who does not approve of Karolina’s working-class background, leaving her alone and pregnant. In this difficult situation, she meets Dagmar, who runs an underground adoption agency. An unusual relationship develops between the women... In The Girl with the Needle, a social drama set against the backdrop of expressionist horror, Magnus von Horn takes an unsettling look at life in post-war Europe, echoes of which can still be felt today. The film was screened in competition at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
